BANXY ❤️

In the bin.

Have you heard of Banksy before reading these materials for class? YES! Our family has been raised on Banksy. Little Sam was only 7 years old when we first saw Exit Through the Gift Shop. It was his first time encountering the “F” word. Because the swearing guy was speaking French we didn’t think Sam would have any exposure but he READ it in the subtitles. Nice one, mother and father.
If so, what do you think of his work. I like it.
Ok, fine.

Its pretty scathing. It sort of comes across as mean; I guess that’s the point. I choose to be delighted by the cleverness rather than bitten by the critique. Not knowing his identity is surely tantalizing! We do know that he is a sort of youngish white fella BUT because he isn’t a certain, specific person its possible that someone else could take over as a new Banksy any time and there can be a Banksy for every generation! What a wonderful idea!

What do you think of the "Balloon Girl / Love is in the Bin" "incident" at Sotheby's?  I think it’s totally fair for him to manufacture an invented past in order to explain the present. I ALSO really appreciated this perspective that he might be the seller of the work and sending it up to auction because that is the most lucrative way to be an artist; especially one whose work is in demand. Damien Hirst did something similar by creating a spectacle of himself as the auctioneer of his own piece. It was suggested in one of the articles that Banksy has one-upped Hirst in this performance.
What are your thoughts on the references/memes based on this work? Memes are fun! Except when they hurt. I betcha Banksy isn’t too pleased by folks profiting off of his work BUT ALSO I’d wager he predicted it. Or at least would act like he did.

How would/could you use Banksy's artworks in your art classroom? Stencils! Maybe a sugar spray paint? A little social commentary- perhaps on school politics or something meaningful to the students everyday life. There are two angles, I think. Either his methods or his messages could be explored. We could dissect what he is saying between the lines and talk about what we would like to say but can’t. Then let’s think about ways to “say” things you can’t speak about.
